Maragogi is known for its crystal-clear and peaceful waters and its beautiful ‘gales’ or ‘croas’; incredible, natural swimming pools that rise from the sandbanks during ebb-tide in the middle of the sea. Boats or local ‘jangadas’; the typical small boats of the Maragogi area, depart from the beaches and will bring you there so you can appreciate the beauty of the coral and the fish and swim inbetween them. Of course there are lots of possibilities for scuba-diving in the reefs and the surrounding areas.
Another unique experience is visiting the local, savage sea-cow or ‘peixe-boi’, which is a part of the protected eco-project in the region.
But when you are looking for something different, you can enjoy a ‘buggy’ ride on the beach, hike through the jungle looking for hidden waterfalls or visit some of the villages nearby. All excursions can be booked via Pousada Praiagogi.
Historical Sites
Ruins of the Monastery of São Bento and the old cemetery: situated in the village of São Bento. It was constructed in the late 17th century and from there you have a beautiful panoramic view over the beaches and the village.
The Mill of Jenipapo: Before you reach the old mill you have to cross the sugar-cane fields using small sandy roads that pass the banana plantations and the small flour factories. The mill was built in 1806 by the Portuguese. Nowadays the mill isn't active anymore but it is still possible to visit the old Miller home which remains partly in its original state.
Church of Nossa Senhora da Guia:Situated in Barra Grande and built in the early 17th century. It still holds the first historic maps which the Dutch made during their occupation of the North Eastern region in the 17th century.
Ship wrecks:the coastal shore of the city of Maragogi hides several sunken, antique vessels to a depth of approximately 20 meters. The Crôa da Áustria, the Camerino and the Trafagá are all dated from around World War II and are just some of the many wrecks. Some scuba-diving schools organise trips to those places but only upon reservation and when the divers can prove that they’re experienced divers.
